Technological Education

Technological education promotes the integration of learning across subject disciplines and provides a practical context and the applications for the knowledge and skills acquired in other subject disciplines. For example, in designing a technological tool, students may gain information about its intended use (social science), about the materials in its construction (science), about mathematical relationships describing its dimensions and shape (mathematics), and about the aesthetic qualities of its design (the arts); they may also create text that outlines procedures for the tool’s use (language). Similarly, technology supports students’ work in other subjects. It develops research skills, supports development in literacy and numeracy, and fosters creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving. In addition, it promotes global citizenship and environmental awareness.

Students in Grade 9 have the opportunity to enroll in the Exploring Technologies course. All Grade 9 Honours Mathematics, Science and Technology students are enrolled in Exploring Technologies.

The Exploring Technologies course enables students to understand the technological and computer concepts they will need in order to design, develop, and build usable products or to deliver services, as well as to pursue further technological studies. Students will use the technological design process and a variety of tools and software to solve problems, complete computer projects, and strengthen their communication skills.

In Grade 10 students at Northview Heights Secondary School have the opportunity to enroll in open technology courses in one or more of the following areas:Communications Technology, Construction Technology, Technological Design and Transportation Technology.

In Grade11 and Grade 12, students have the opportunity to enroll in university preparation technology courses in the areas of Communications, and Technological Design. Grade 11 and Grade 12 students also have the opportunity to enroll in college preparation technological courses in the following areas: Communications, Construction, Technological Design, and Transportation Technology.
