Grade 9 Programs
Research has shown that student success in Grade 9 is a predictor for graduation. The Grade 9 Core Program at Northview encourages both academic and social success by offering Core classes in a small group setting. Social bonds are formed with other students in the Core group, and the two Core teachers monitor student progress and maintain regular contact with parents and guardians throughout the year.
Core Classes
English, Math, Geography, and Science are taught with a global perspective in a team teaching environment for the entire school year. Every attempt is made to integrate curriculum so that students see links between and across subjects. Computer skills are emphasized across the curriculum. For those with a special interest in art and computers, CyberARTS is a school-wide program that begins in Grade 9. For those with a special interest in Math, Science and Technology, the Honours Math, Science & Technology Program is available. Both specialized programs have an interview process and admission standards. The Academic Program for Gifted Athletes also begins in Grade 9.
Semestered Subjects
Physical Education, the Arts, French and either Business or Technology are each studied for one semester. The Business course includes computer applications. The Arts focus is on both appreciation and skills. French is offered at a variety of levels. Physical Education encourages life skills as well as recreational skills.
Peer Tutors
Teachers support learning with the assistance of peer tutors. These students act as role models in the classroom and earn a credit by providing in-class tutoring for Grade 9 students
